What does Gothic refers to? According to Dictionary.com, the word has different meanings, including:
- Anything related to the Goths (an East Germanic tribe of Scandinavian origin) and their language.

- A style of architecture popular in Europe from the 12th through 16th centuries.
- Belonging to the Dark Ages.
- It is also used to refer to literature and art with gloomy and dark undertones. For example, many works of fiction of the 18th and 19th centuries were "Gothic" in style. In fact, this type of fiction was called "Gothic horror", mixing horror and romance. Faust: A Romance of the Secret Tribunals , a Gothic novel written by George W. M. Reynolds in 1874, is a perfect example. It included elements such as haunted castles, terrible villains, and innocent damsels in distress.
So going with the last definition, Gothic angels are angels depicted in a darker light. Some of these works depict fallen angels such as Lucifer.
Dark Angels?
Sacred texts, legends, and literature are filled with stories of dark angels. The following are two intriguing angels from the dark side.
Azazel - A mythical being, he is mentioned three times in Hebrew sacred texts. Some scholars believe Azazel is either a demon or a deity. However, The Book of Enoch says that Azazel was one of the fallen angels who married women.
Enoch 1 also mentions that Azazel taught people how to make weapons and cosmetics, which contributed to their corruption. For this reason he was cast out of heaven:
And Azazel taught men to make swords and knives and shields and breastplates; and made known to them the metals [of the earth] and the art of working them; and bracelets and ornaments; and the use of antimony and the beautifying of the eyelids; and all kinds of costly stones and all colouring tinctures. ~ Enoch 8:1-2
Azrael - In Jewish and Islamic traditions, Azrael is the angel of death. He stays besides the dying, watches over them, helps the soul leave their bodies, guides them as they live the physical world, and welcomes them into the spirit world.
Do dark angels exist? I do not have a answer to that question. I believe that God is light and He is the only presence, therefore; only the light is the ultimate truth. I'm not saying that darkness does not exist. We have all experienced dark moments and difficult times. But ultimately, light prevails.
Artistic temperament sometimes seems a battleground, a dark angel of destruction
and a bright angel of creativity wrestling.
