What are fairies?

A fairy is a supernatural creature believed to be imbued with magical powers.

Some people call them elementals or nature spirits. Fairies are part of the lore of many cultures and are often described and/or depicted as having a human-like appearance.

In the West, fairy tales are very popular. Most kids grow up listening to stories filled with magical beings. Some well-known fairies found in legend and literature include: Oberon (The King of the Fairies), Tinkerbell (Peter Pan), and Titania (The Queen of the Fairies).

The term fairy comes from the Middle English word faierie (enchantment), which in turns comes from Old French.

Fairies are invisible and inaudible like angels. But their magic sparkles in nature. ~ Lynn Holland

Blind folk see the fairies.
Oh, better far than we,
Who miss the shining of their wings
Because our eyes are filled with things
We do not wish to see.

~ Rose Fyleman
